Pastor’s Pen
Shepherds on the Judean hills that first Christmas night possessed the essence of profound faith. They had the faith and daring to go to the most commonplace spot - a dull, drab cattle shed - and look there for a sign of the Eternal.
While Bethlehem was a once in a lifetime manifestation of God in flesh, it was not unique in its message. God always enters through the door of the commonplace. He incarnated Himself in the dull, drab moments of our days. Those who have insight still look for Him in that environment.
They dared to believe that the most ordinary place could hold the most extraordinary revelation of the Almighty. I believe every day of our lives, God offers us extraordinary revelation in the most ordinary places.
As far as the throngs in Bethlehem’s streets were concerned, no Messiah had come; no Savior had been born. The indifferent and the preoccupied know no revelation and no miracles.
Preoccupation is the greatest peril to revelation and miracle. Small matters often crowd out the biggest issues of life. Just like lesser guests filled the rooms of the innkeeper, and the Majesty of the Millenniums was forced into the stable, we force God into an hour on Sunday, because the inn of our weekday is crowded with lesser issues.
This world is crammed with the Glory of God. Still, Christ can be found in the most unexpected places.
Revelation waits for our wits to become sharper, our awareness to become deepened and our faith to dare to expect God’s most significant manifestations in the commonplace of our lives.
